Vibe: I often refer to Dartmouth as the 'Brooklyn' of Halifax.

Over the years it has gone from 'little sibling' to a vibrant & high-demand area. Much like the North End of Halifax, Downtown Dartmouth offers a blend of historic charm, lakes, restaurants and ways to spend the day.

Walkability: It varies; because Dartmouth is large. Walkability is great downtown, but definitely varies as you get out into its various subdivisions.

Jess' Picks:

  • take in the colourful character homes on the 'Flower Streets': Rose, Tulip, Dahlia

  • croissants at Two If By Sea

  • buy a package of Matty Matheson's Rink Drink at Anchored Coffee

  • visit the famous geese at Sullivan's Pond

  • swim at Lake Banook and keep an eye on the calendar for world class events like various international Canoe Sprint Championships

  • move your body at the recently renovated Zatzman Sportsplex

  • The Canteen for food made with fresh, local ingredients

  • North Brewing in Cole Harbour for craft brews

  • Saturday morning market at Alderney landing

  • Nature Folk for an urban sauna, cold dip and hottub experience

  • Activate in Dartmouth Crossing is a go-to for kids and families

  • IKEA (Halifax just got one in the last few years; its a big deal for us!)

  • Shubie Park for urban dog walking and nature trails

Schools of note: Dartmouth High for its IB program. Crichton Park & Hawthorn elementary schools. Ellenvale & Bicentennial junior high schools.

Price Point: Huge variance in pricing. From the higher priced Crichton Park & Portland Hills/Estates ($700k +) to entry level Forest Hills and Woodlawn ($450k +) and everything in between.
