Vibe: Old Clayton Park was developed primarily in the 1960s and 70s. Characterized by its hilly terrain, wide streets and an abundance of greenery. Primarily mid-century split-levels, large bungalows and two-storey family homes on larger lots than in Fairview.

Fairview is one of Halifax’s oldest suburbs. Originally a working-class community that has seen significant development and an increase in popularity due to proximity to the city and its affordability. Full of families and young professionals. Dominated by post-war bungalows and 1.5 storey homes on mature lots. New development is also ongoing.

Walkability: Not great. You'll need to take transit, ride a bike or car to get to many amenities. Dutch Village Road is at the bottom of Fairview and has restaurants, a pet food store and other shops for convenience. Head to Lacewood area for larger grocery stores.

Jess' Picks:

  • Aster Cafe for great Ethiopian food

  • trivia nights at Freeman's Little New York

  • Canada Games Centre ; 176,000-square-foot multi-sport facility

  • HEADstart tennis centre year-round tennis facility

  • Keshen Goodman Library; celebrated a grand reopening following a major multi-phase renovation that began in late 2022

  • easy access to Bayers Lake business park with Costco, hardware stores and my favourite, Lee Valley

  • the IMAX screen at Scotiabank Theatre; the only one in Nova Scotia

  • Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area; a massive, near-urban wilderness protected area located behind Bayers Lake with plenty of trails

Schools of note: Fairview Junior High (6-8) is often praised by former students and parents for its dedicated teaching staff and strong extracurricular programs. Park West School (P–9) avoids the transition to a separate junior high. Known for its modern facilities and diverse student body. Halifax West High School: Both Fairview and Clayton Park students typically feed into it. Consistently ranked well for its International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, extensive athletic programs and its state-of-the-art facility located just off the Bedford Highway.

Price Point: Expect to pay $400k-$650k in Fairview. Clayton Park typically falls between $500k-$700k. For me, these areas offer some of the best value in the city. Clayton Park West reflects the newer age of the inventory; and is condo heavy. Expect prices to start at $400k for condos. Glenbourne & Bridgeview vary widely at these same price points depending on age and style.
